Peradeniya and Prof. A. Sathasivam’s University Life

Peradeniya is one of Sri Lanka’s most important university towns. It is closely associated with the development of the University of Ceylon and the later University of Peradeniya, one of the country’s major centres of higher education. The University of Ceylon was established in 1942, and Peradeniya became central to its expansion.

Prof. A. Sathasivam read Tamil as a special subject at the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya from 1948 to 1952. He graduated in the first division, became Assistant Lecturer in Tamil in 1952, obtained his M.A. in 1954, and later returned as Professor of Tamil from 1981 to 1988.

Peradeniya was one of the most important academic locations in Prof. Sathasivam’s life. It was where he developed as a university student, began his teaching career, completed his M.A., and later served as Professor of Tamil.
