Early Academic Career at Peradeniya, 1952–1965

Prof. A. Sathasivam’s academic career began at the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya, where he was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Tamil in 1952 after graduating with First Division honours in Tamil Special. This appointment marked the beginning of a long university career devoted to Tamil language, literature and linguistics.

After completing his M.A. in 1954 and his D.Phil. at Oxford from 1954 to 1956, he returned to academic life with stronger linguistic training. From 1956 to 1965, he served as Senior Lecturer in Tamil at Peradeniya. During this period, his scholarship developed across Tamil grammar, classical language study and comparative linguistics.
