Colombo and Prof. A. Sathasivam’s Academic Career

Colombo is Sri Lanka’s largest commercial city and one of the country’s most important educational and administrative centres. Historically, it became especially prominent during the colonial period and remained central to Sri Lanka’s public, academic and cultural life after independence.

For Prof. A. Sathasivam, Colombo was important at two stages. As a student, he attended Ananda College, Colombo, where he completed his Higher School Certificate and Mathurai Pandit Examination in 1947. Later, he served in the Tamil department at the University of Ceylon, Colombo Campus, becoming Professor of Tamil in 1970.

How it relates to Prof. A. Sathasivam:

Colombo connects both his pre-university education and his senior academic career. It was the city where he prepared for university-level Tamil studies and later held one of the most important appointments of his professional life.
